- To soften, level and smooth out the topsoil so that it’s ready for planting.
Using a landscape rake means you don’t need to rototill, and the advantage of that is you’re not destroying the whole soil structure, only preparing the surface to make planting easier.
When you rototill, the microorganisms which are vital to the soil’s health die off, so you’re left with depleted soil (which is now just dirt rather than soil, you could say) so you’re forced to add fertilizer to try to compensate for what those microorganisms like bacteria and fungi were providing for free.
Not only that, but worms and other underground creatures create lots of little channels as they chew through the soil, which help to bring oxygen and water into the ground below, making it much easier for plants to find the nutrients they need to thrive. “Earthworms are nature’s tillers,” as they say.
